Pop-up musical fashion book, BA
(hons) Degree Show, Central Saint Martins
“The origin of my work is inspired
by visiting Japan in 1990 where I became
interested in the senses, in particular
smell and touch (‘massage‘ chairs
and aromatherapy massage) Around the same
time I began experimenting with paper engineering
and microchips found in greeting cards.
For my final CSM degree show (1991) in
Fashion Communication I designed “Wonder”,
a 3-Dimensional multi-sensory pop-up book,
with integrated microchips using sound,
light, colour and texture.
However something more emotional was missing
which was ‘smell’. I was unable
to demonstrate smell in a similar electronic
format and found scratch n’ sniff
the only available medium.
After working as a fashion stylist for
three years I went to the Royal College
of Art to study for an Mphil ‘Surface
Design Of The Senses”. I began researching
kinetic structures for ‘massage clothing’
followed by new methods of aroma delivery
in fabric so after one year I upgraded to
a PhD “Interactive Olfactory Surfaces”
